This article will walk you through the steps required to setup your Blue Monkee mailbox for IMAP access on your iPhone (iPad is very similar). This article assumes that you have already logged into your cPanel account and configured a mailbox. You will need to know your server name, and the mailbox's password to complete this task.
Step 1
From the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.
Step 2
Scroll down the settings screen and tap the Mail, Contacts, Calendars item.
Step 3
Tap the Add Account... item.
Step 4
Scroll down to the bottom of the account types, and tap Other.
Step 5
Tap Add Mail Account.
Step 6
Enter the initial account settings as follows:
- Name : Just enter a friendly name here that will identify you to your email recipients
- Email : This should be the full email address you configured earlier in cPanel
- Password : the mailbox password you created in cPanel for the mailbox (NOT your cPanel password, or Blue Monkee client login password)
- Description : Just a friendly name to label this account on your iDevice
When you are done, tap Next at the top right.
Step 7
- IMAP Should be selected by default - if not, then tap it.
- Name : Should be pre-filled with the friendly name you gave in the previous step.
- Email : Should be pre-filled with the email address you gave in the previous step.
- Description : Should be pre-filled with the description you gave in the previous step.
Incoming Mail Server & Outgoing Mail Server (YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH - THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL)
- Host Name : Enter your Home Server name here - this was given to you in your welcome email.
- User Name : Enter the full email address for the mailbox you configured in cPanel.
- Password : Enter the mailbox password.
When you are done, tap Next at the top right.
If you get an error saying that your details were rejected, then type them in again, VERY CAREFULLY. You wouldn't believe how many times people ring us up only to find they are typing the wrong password or entering it incorrectly.
Step 8
If you got things right, then you will see some spinning icons while iOS checks your credentials with the server, and then you will be asked to save the account. You can turn Notes off at this point as you are probably using iCloud or some other service for that. Tap Save.
Step 9 - An interlude
iOS will now dump you back at the Mail, Contacts, Calendars setup panel. So, just tap on the account you just created. This will bring you back to the account's activation panel. Just tap the account name to continue.
Step 10
This will take you back to the Account panel. Scroll right to the bottom, and you should see an Advanced button - Tap it.
Step 11 - Ensuring Incoming SSL Authentication
You will now be back on the Advanced screen. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and make sure that the Use SSL toggle is turned on as shown. Also make sure that the IMAP Path Prefix is set to INBOX. The Server Port can be set to 143 or 993 - either should work fine.
Tap the Account button (top left) to return to the Account screen.
Step 12
Tap the Advanced button again (this is necessary for the app to pick up the new IMAP prefix we just entered).
On the Advanced screen, you can see that iOS is using the local Drafts, Sent, Deleted, and Archive folders. You probably want to use the server based versions of these folders instead so that you can share your mailbox with other computers/devices. The method for each of the mailboxes is the same so we'll just show you how to do the Sent Mailbox here. So, tap Sent Mailbox.
Step 13
- You will probably find that the Sent item ON MY IPHONE is currently ticked. Tap on the Sent item under ON THE SERVER in order to save your sent items on the server instead. You can repeat steps 11 and 12 for the Drafts, Deleted, and Archive mailboxes.
- When you are done - tap the Advanced button (top left 1) to return to the previous screen.
Step 14 - Ensuring Outgoing SSL Authentication
Now, finally, from the Account screen, tap the OUTGOING MAIL SERVER button as shown.
This will open the SMTP panel. The PRIMARY SERVER should already show the server that you configured earlier. You only want this one server enabled. If any of the others are showing as On, then tap them and turn them Off for this account. OK, so if everything is fine, go ahead and tap your primary server as shown.
Again, check to make sure that the Use SSL toggle is turned on (as shown). The Server Port will work with 25. Some ISPs don't allow their customer to connect to third party mail servers, so if you are getting a connection error for the outgoing server you can change the Server Port to 525.
All Done!
Now you just need to save all of these settings, so Tap Done in the top right every time it appears as you exit from the settings back to the main Settings panel.
That's it - you have now setup your iPhone to connect to a standard IMAP mailbox correctly and most importantly securely!
